In Lifeboat Cities, writer and commentator Brendan Gleeson considers the principal social and ecological threats facing Australia, and outlines ways in which these crises need to be confronted and addressed. Environmental degradation (especially climate change) and a failing social care system are at the heart of his argument. He examines the origins and significance of these threats in the wake of decades of neo-liberal reform, globalisation and cultural change; and outlines the period of emergency we must pass through as global heating and resources shortages mainfest at major scales in the next few decades. Lastly, he proposes a new social dispensation for society: one that will help us survive the times of stress and be our lifeboat to a better world. |
